When is endodontic treatment required?
It is necessary to have endodontic treatment or root canal therapy when inside of the tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This may happen due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, crack in the tooth or faulty crowns. Pulp damage may also accrue as a result of traumatic injury to the tooth. When pulp infection is left untreated it will cause pain and eventually lead to a tooth abscess.
Saving your tooth with endodontic treatment
When you undergo endodontic therapy, the infected and inflamed pulp tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Rubber like sealing material called gutta-percha is then used to fill the canal to prevent any bacteria from entering and reinfecting your tooth. After endodontic therapy is completed the tooth is restored with a crown or filling and will continue to feel and function as any other tooth.
Endodontic treatment insures that you continue to eat food that you love, keep your natural smile and saves you money on ongoing dental work. With proper care endodontically treated teeth will last a lifetime.
